5 Myths About Women and Weightlifting You Need to Stop Believing

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

If you’ve ever hesitated to lift weights because you were worried about

looking “bulky” or “too masculine,” you’re not alone—and I’m here to set the record straight. As a trainer and nutritionist who works with women every day, I’ve heard all the fears, doubts, and myths about strength training. But here’s the thing: lifting weights is one of the best things you can do for your body, mind, and confidence. Let’s tackle the five biggest myths about women and weightlifting that might be keeping you from the results you want.

Myth #1: Lifting Makes You Bulky

I get why this one sticks around—it’s been drilled into us forever. But here’s the truth: unless you’re eating and training specifically to build serious muscle (which is hard to do), you’re not going to get bulky. Women’s bodies simply don’t have the same testosterone levels as men, so lifting weights will make you look toned and strong—not like a bodybuilder.

Myth #2: Cardio Is the Only Way to Lose Weight

I totally understand the appeal of seeing those calorie numbers tick up on the treadmill screen. But here’s the kicker: strength training doesn’t just burn calories while you’re working out—it keeps your metabolism revved up for hours afterward. Plus, building muscle means your body naturally burns more calories at rest. So, don’t ditch the weights if you’re aiming for fat loss!

Myth #3: Light Weights and High Reps Are Enough

If you’ve been sticking to 5-pound dumbbells because you want to “tone,” let me nudge you to try something heavier. Lifting challenging weights (with good form, of course) is what creates those lean, sculpted muscles we all want. It’s not about endless reps—it’s about pushing yourself and giving your body a reason to change.

Myth #4: Lifting Is Only for Young Women

This one needs to go! Strength training is for everyone, no matter your age. It’s especially important as we get older because it helps maintain bone density, protects your joints, and keeps you feeling strong and capable. Whether you’re in your 20s, 50s, or beyond, it’s never too late to start.

Myth #5: Lifting Will Make You Look Less Feminine

Honestly, this one frustrates me the most. There’s nothing more empowering (or feminine) than feeling strong and confident in your own skin. Lifting weights helps define your natural shape, improves posture, and gives you a glow of self-assuredness. It’s not about looking like anyone else—it’s about feeling amazing as you.

Why Strength Training Is a Game-Changer

At the end of the day, lifting weights isn’t just about building muscle. It’s about building a body that works for you—one that’s strong, healthy, and ready to take on anything life throws your way.

If you’re ready to stop believing the myths and start building the body (and confidence) you deserve, let’s talk. My coaching program is all about helping women like you feel fit, sexy, and strong—for life. You in?
