Staying Fit and Sane During the Holidays

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

The holiday season is chaos central. Between shopping, traveling, parties,

and endless to-do lists, it can feel impossible to keep up with a fitness routine. And let’s be honest—when things get hectic, workouts are often the first thing to go.

But here’s the deal: staying active during the holidays doesn’t mean spending hours in the gym or turning down every invite so you can fit in a workout. It’s about keeping things simple, manageable, and maybe even fun.

Start Small and Be Realistic

You don’t need to crush a two-hour workout every day to stay on track. Short workouts are your best friend right now. A 20-minute bodyweight session in your living room or a quick walk around the block can do wonders for your energy and mood. It’s about moving consistently, not perfectly.

Set a goal that works for your holiday schedule. Maybe it’s three workouts a week instead of your usual five, or maybe it’s just aiming to stay active by walking, stretching, or dancing around the kitchen while you bake cookies.

Incorporate Movement Into Traditions

Family walk after dinner? Ice skating with friends? Playing tag with your kids in the backyard? These all count as exercise, and they’re a great way to stay active while making memories. Fitness doesn’t have to be confined to a gym.

If you’re traveling, pack resistance bands or use bodyweight exercises to get a quick workout in wherever you are. Think squats, push-ups, planks—simple moves that don’t require any equipment.

Reframe Exercise as Self-Care

Instead of viewing your workout as just another item on your never-ending to-do list, see it as something you’re doing for you. Exercise can help reduce stress, boost your mood, and give you more energy to tackle the holiday craziness.

And if the idea of a “workout” feels overwhelming, think of it as movement. Stretch for 10 minutes in the morning, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or spend a few minutes doing yoga before bed.

Focus on Consistency, Not Perfection

The truth is, the holidays are not the time to set overly ambitious fitness goals. You’re not going to ruin your progress if your workouts look a little different right now. The key is to keep moving and maintain the habits you’ve already built.

It’s okay to scale back. Doing something is better than doing nothing, and showing up for yourself—even in small ways—will help you feel more grounded during a busy season.

Your Holiday Survival Plan

The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, not stressed over. A flexible approach to fitness can help you stay consistent while still soaking up all the fun.
