Why Moderation Works - How to Keep Your Results Long-Term

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

Let’s be real—most diets make it seem like you need to cut out all your favorite foods to see results. But long-term success doesn’t come from never touching pizza again or saying no to dessert forever. It comes from learning how to enjoy what you love in moderation, while still making progress.

So, how do you make that happen? Here are two ways you can include your favorite foods in your diet and still shed fat.

1. Practice Portion Control

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the foods you love while staying on track is through portion control. That doesn’t mean you need to whip out a scale for every bite (unless you want to!). Instead, focus on being mindful of how much you’re eating.

Let’s say you’re craving something indulgent, like a brownie. Instead of cutting out sweets entirely, have a smaller portion and savor it. That way, you don’t feel deprived or like you’re missing out. The key is balance—if you enjoy a treat, balance it out with nutrient-dense, whole foods for the rest of the day. You can absolutely have your cake and eat it too (just maybe a slice instead of the whole thing!).

2. Use the 80/20 Rule

Another great way to keep the foods you love in your diet is by using the 80/20 rule. This rule is simple: 80% of your diet comes from nutrient-dense, whole foods, and 20% can be more flexible.

For example, if you’re hitting your protein, fiber, and micronutrient goals most of the time, it’s okay to enjoy a burger or fries every once in a while. By allowing some flexibility, you’re less likely to feel restricted or binge on “off-limits” foods. Plus, it makes your diet more sustainable for the long haul.

Why Moderation Works

The bottom line is that moderation helps you build a healthy relationship with food. By learning to include the foods you love while staying mindful, you avoid the all-or-nothing mindset that derails so many diets. And guess what? You can still shed fat and reach your goals without living in a constant state of restriction.
